It all begins with an idea.

The first night of the 2025 NFL Draft is just a few weeks away. We won’t have to wait at all for the Tennessee Titans pick, as the team is currently slated to pick at No.1 overall, and it looks like Miami quarterback Cam Ward will be the selection.

Ward has the potential to be a game-changer at the next level and the Titans will be banking on him becoming their franchise quarterback. However, Tennessee must sign this veteran free agent before turning the card in and making Ward a Titan.

Titans should sign Wide Receiver Tyler Lockett

Lockett was released by the Seattle Seahawks before the start of free agency and is still on the market. The veteran didn’t have a fantastic 2024 campaign, hauling in just 49 receptions for 600 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games. However, he was the No.3 receiver behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba and DK Metcalf.

Though Lockett will turn 33 in September and isn’t a dynamic threat with the ball, Tennessee should look to sign him in free agency. The 2015 first-team All-Pro selection is still a savvy route runner who has a ton of experience and is also a fantastic leader. Lockett has posted four 1,000-yard seasons in his ten-year career and is just two years removed from a solid 2023 campaign, where he totaled 79 catches for 894 yards and five touchdowns.

Lockett will also be relatively cheap to sign, as Spotrac projects he’ll land a one-year deal worth $7.7 million. I wouldn’t be surprised if that number is even lower. According to Over the Cap, the Titans still have $38.8 million in cap space.

A rookie quarterback needs a lot to flourish, but history tells us that giving a rookie signal-caller a veteran security blanket usually leads to good things. Jayden Daniels had Zach Ertz as his security blanket last year and will also have him back this year. C.J. Stroud had and still has Dalton Schultz. Dak Prescott had Cole Beasley during his stellar rookie season in 2016.

Tyler Lockett isn’t very exciting, but signing him to a cheap deal to serve as Cam Ward’s security blanket will increase Tennessee’s chances of having success with Ward right out the gate. Lockett will also be a nice mentor for a young Titans’ offense.
