Kevin Byard Trade Grades: Titans deal the All-pro Safety to Philly
The Tennessee Titans traded a franchise icon today as they shipped Kevin Byard to the defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Tennessee is currently sitting at 2-4, and trading Byard likely means a rebuild is on the move for the two-tone blue. On the other hand, the Eagles may have just become the new NFC Favorite as they fill one of their most pressing needs at safety. Let's grade the trade for both teams and declare a premature winner…
Titans: C+
In return for Byard, Tennessee received 2024 fifth and sixth-round picks alongside Safety Terrell Edmunds. Though many are extremely upset with the Titans' return for Byard, Ran Carthon got everything he could've acquired in the deal. Kevin Byard is over 30 years old, has a humongous contract, and isn't as dominant as he used to be. With Byard's departure, Elijah Molden will likely step up as the starter safety next to Amani Hooker. Tennessee also acquired Terrell Edmunds in the deal, who started two games for Philadelphia this season before being dealt. I expect Edmunds to play a spot role for the Titans' Defense and to provide satisfactory secondary depth. Terrell is a free agent in 2024 and must impress Ran Carthon to be brought back. Long story short, the Titans got rid of an aging player with a gigantic contract for draft capital and a rotational defensive player. Not great, but it was the best offer on the table for Tennessee.
Eagles: B+
Philly needed safety help badly, and they got a significant upgrade with Byard. Though he isn't an All-Pro-level safety anymore, KB is still close to a Pro Bowl-level starter and will immediately impact the Eagles' Secondary day one. The best part of the deal for Philly is that they barely gave up anything for the two-time All-Pro. Edmunds hardly played for them, and late-round picks mean little to Howie Roseman, as he is looking to win a Super Bowl now. At the end of the day, the Eagles got better today and may have separated themselves as the best team in the NFC..
