Is it Over for Trey Lance in San Francisco?
Lance was selected third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft
The San Francisco 49ers have had a QB carousel for the past couple of years, and the team believed that Trey Lance would be the solution. Lance was drafted with the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the 49ers via trade. The former NDSU star has battled injuries so far in his NFL Career and hasn’t been able to really get going. As a result of Lance and Garoppolo’s injuries, Brock Purdy was able to take the starting spot and never look back. Mr.Irrelevant took the 49ers to the NFCG last year and is expected to be the 49ers’ starter this year if healthy. This begs the question, is it over for Trey Lance in the Bay Area…
There is no denying Lance’s athleticism and talent, as he was the number three pick for a reason. His ability to run the football and make wow throws is off the charts, but the ladder has struggled with one aspect in his limited starts, inconsistency. Some games, Lance looks like a bona fide franchise QB, and in other games, he looks like Zach Wilson. Lance has the highest of ups and the lowest of downs. Granted, it is unfair to judge Lance based on his limited action, as he has only started four games in his career. What we should be watching and judging is the improvement, has Trey Lance improved in the off-season? Videos of Trey Lance have surfaced on the internet of him missing throws in training camp. While many are ridiculing him for this, take it with a grain of salt as it is only one throw in a practice drill. According to many 49ers reporters, Lance has looked good in camp but has also been inconsistent. Some days of practice are marvelous and some are underwhelming. With inconsistency being one of Lance’s weaknesses, this isn’t great news. Despite all of this, 49ers GM John Lynch came to the defense of the QB he drafted and traded for, saying Lance has improved in the off-season….
Now it’s time to answer the question, should the 49ers admit they were wrong and let go of Lance? The answer is a big no. Firstly, you can’t cut him, and trading him might be harder given most teams are now satisfied with their QB rooms. Also, letting go of a guy who has only started four games and hasn’t really been given a fair shot is foolish. We are assuming Purdy will start, but it isn’t set in stone yet and things could change. Don’t move on from a guy you traded and invested so much in this early, and give him a shot to turn things around…….
