Caleb Williams, you are an Arizona CardinAL!
The Arizona Cardinals are one of the worst teams in the NFL, as the roster isn’t filled with much talent or excitement. Though the team won’t publicly admit it, it’s obvious that the Cardinals are tanking for the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, aka Heisman Trophy Winner Caleb Williams…
The Cardinals made several confusing and baffling roster moves yesterday that show the team isn’t trying to win in 2023. First, they traded young and versatile linebacker Isaiah Simmons to the NY Giants for just a future seventh-round pick. Though Simmons was inconsistent and didn’t fit what the Cardinals wanted to do on defense, getting only a seventh for him is terrible value. You spent a top-10 selection on this guy and threw him away for nothing. This should be a great trade for New York as Wink Martindale will love Simmons’ versatility and will use it all around the field. We all thought the moves were over for AZ after the Simmons trade, but no…
A couple of hours later, Arizona traded OT Josh Jones along with a seventh-round pick to Houston for a fifth-round pick. This trade isn’t as bad and was probably the best move the Cardinals made all day. Jones was unlikely to make much of an impact on the team in 2023. For Houston, they add some good tackle depth to protect their franchise QB. Overall, this move isn’t bad, but a team trying to win wouldn’t trade away good offensive line depth…
Finally, the Cardinals made the most confusing move of all, trading for QB Josh Dobbs. Though many believe this move makes sense, I really don’t see why. Giving up future draft picks for a QB who is not going to be on the team next year and might not even start seems weird. AZ also drafted Clayton Tune in the fifth round this year, so this move just doesn’t make any sense. With Kyler Murray out for the first half of the season, Mccoy will likely be the starter and Dobbs the backup. If that doesn’t scream tank to you, I don’t know what does…
Arizona didn’t make bad moves, but they were just a bit confusing, to say the least. The Simmons trade was the only one I would say Arizona definitively lost. Trading away Josh Jones wasn’t terrible, but a non-tanking team would never trade away a decent depth piece at O-Line. Trading for Dobbs was very confusing, as they just drafted a decent QB depth option in the fifth round of this year’s draft. With Kyler Murray likely being out for half of this year, I don’t see Arizona being a good team at all. Plus, these moves they made today didn’t improve their team, it made them worse. AZ will be the worst team in the NFL next year, and the Golden Prize from USC will be theirs….
