Titans Fall to Colts 23-16 Behind Dreadful Defensive Showing
The most inconsistent team in the league strikes again. The Titans fell to the Colts on the road earlier today 23-16, and the score doesn’t show how poor the Titans played today. Though they only lost by seven, Tennessee was outplayed on both sides of the ball and Mike Vrabel was completely outcoached by a rookie head coach. Let’s take a deeper look into this sickening Tennessee Titans loss…
Before we get to the bad, let’s talk about the few positives from this game. Deandre Hopkins shut down any talk about him being washed with an impressive 140-yard day. Dhop was excellent at working the middle of the field and caught almost every ball thrown in his direction. The Titans finally scored a road touchdown, as Tyjae Spears found a crease on an end around and soared in for a 19-yard score. Spears has been a pleasant surprise for Tennessee this season, as he has been a refreshing change of pace back alongside Derrick Henry. Speaking of Derrick Henry, the King had a quiet day today with 43 yards and only 3.3 yards per carry. Though he threw the game-winning interception, Ryan Tannehill honorably commanded the Titans’ Offense today with 264 pass yards. They only gave up one sack today, but the Titans’ O-Line struggled to hang with the Colts’ talented D-Line. Peter Skoronski returned to the lineup today but struggled at times. Tennessee moved the ball well today, but the settling on offense was discouraging. Tennessee had four attempts in the red zone, converting just one for six. This has to change in the future if the Titans want to be successful on offense. We talked about the positives, but now it’s time to get to the negatives… aka the defense.
The Titans’ Defense was horrendous today, and that might be putting it lightly. Though they only allowed 23 points, the defense gave up explosive play after explosive play and couldn’t stop the run to save their lives. Jonathan Taylor returned today for Indy, but he wasn’t even the best running back on his team today. Zach Moss ran all over the Titans, rushing for 165 yards and two touchdowns. As a team, the Colts ran for 193 yards and 5.7 yards per carry. Anthony Richardson left the game early with a shoulder injury, but it didn’t matter because Gardner Minshew diced up the Titans in the second half. Minshew threw for 155 yards and completed over 78% of his passes. Rookie WR Josh Downs was all over the field, hauling in six catches for 97 yards. The Titans’ defense gave up 236 passing yards today, and there is one man who deserves most of the blame: Kristian Fulton. The former second-round pick out of LSU was awful today, committing multiple Defensive Pass Interferences and letting up chunk plays down the field. Fulton struggled mightily today, but he wasn’t the only Tennessee defender who sucked today. Jeffery Simmons and the defensive line got slapped in the trenches by Quenton Nelson and the Colts’ O-Line. Azeez Al-Shaair and Jack Gibbens couldn’t shed blocks to save their lives, and the rest of the secondary wasn’t inspiring as well. Shane Bowen also didn’t call a great game and couldn’t solve problems…
The 2023 Tennessee Titans are confusing, to say the least. One week, they will look like legitimate Super Bowl comedians, and the next week look like a team that will be picking in the top ten in April. Mike Vrabel has to get this team on the right track, or a fire sale at the trade deadline is a real possibility…
