NFL Head Coaches Hot Seat Entering Week 8

The NFL Season is nearing the halfway point, and shockingly, no head coach has been fired thus far. Though many teams are struggling and will hire new coaches in 2024, no owner has outed their coach in season yet. Let's take a look at some head coaches who were on the hot seat before the season and check in on how they're doing as the first half of the season comes to a close…

BRANDON Staley, Chargers

Staley has been on the hot seat ever since his disastrous blown lead in the playoffs against the Jags last season, and he hasn't improved his case at all to start in 2023. LA is 2-4, and Staley still needs to take the next step as a head coach. The former DC of the Rams continues to blunder with clock management, and many are complaining that he is holding Justin Herbert back. Before the season, I said that it was unlikely that the Chargers would fire Staley in season, but my opinion has changed a whole bunch. The Chargers play the Bears this week, and if LA loses to a Justin Fields-less Chicago Team, it should be the nail in the coffin for Brandon Staley in Inglewood...

Josh McDaniels, Raiders

The Raiders are off to a surprisingly good 3-4 start, as many believed they would be one of the most flawed teams in the NFL. McDaniels hasn't been horrid, but he hasn't done anything special with this Raiders' team with limitless potential. Davante Adams has been a nonfactor over the past couple of weeks, Josh Jacobs has been dreadful for most of the year, and Jimmy G has been erratic. This isn't all McDaniels' fault, but the former Patriots' OC hasn't coached enough winning football to keep his job post-2024. There's still a chance he gets fired this season, but Las Vegas likely pulls the plug on the McDaniels' Era in 2024...

Todd Bowles, Bucs

After an impressive 3-1 start, the Bucs have fallen back down to Earth the last three weeks. The Bucs' most recent loss to Josh Allen and the Bills tells you all you need to know about Todd Bowles. The former Jets' Head Coach lacks awareness and intelligence in late-game situations, and his clock management skills are awful, to put it lightly. Bowles is an outstanding Defensive Coordinator but doesn't have what it takes to lead a group of men into battle. Tampa will have a new head coach in 2024, but there is a strong possibility that a new man will command the ship by Thanksgiving...

Matt Eberflus, Bears

Eberflus saved his job for at least another week after he guided the Bears to their first home win in over a year against the Raiders. Though Chicago may have finally discovered their identity, it's hard to overlook Eberflus' 5-19 record and bonehead decisions. Botching a 21-point lead to the lowly Broncos' should've been the nail in the coffin for Eberflus, but Chicago decided to ride it out of the rest of the way with the former Colts' DC. There's still a possibility that he'll get fired in season, but the change will likely happen in 2024...

Ron Rivera, Commanders

It crushes me to put Rivera on this list, as he has been the face of this franchise over the past half-decade. He had to deal with all the Dan Snyder drama and kept the organization going during that challenging time. But at the end of the day, the NFL is a business, and Rivera isn't getting it done. The Commanders are sitting at 3-4 and have lost multiple games they should've won. Rivera's coaching style has been successful over the years, but it is clear that the league is moving away from it. Riverboat Ron likely won't be fired in season, but he has to conduct something special this season to win over the new ownership...

Being an NFL Head Coach is one of the most demanding jobs in sports, and only a few are cut out to do it. As we see more head coaches losing their jobs, remember that. These guys have families and are losing a job that they love...
